VA Benefits Most Veterans Don’t Know About
By Bill Osborne, Owner, Right at Home, Gastonia
As a Marine veteran myself, I stand on behalf of all veterans and want to help direct these honorable men and women to the full financial and health benefits that they deserve. Senior veterans or surviving spouses of senior veterans may be eligible to receive significant monetary assistance (some individuals are eligible for up to $26,036 annually) for home care services. These at-home caregiver services include:
- Transportation
- Companionship and Homemaking
- Meal Planning and Preparation
- Physical Assistance and Personal Care
- Medication and Everyday Health Reminders
- Bill Paying and Money Management
Aid & Attendance (A&A)
For eligible candidates, the Aid & Attendance (A&A) benefit provides financial aid to help offset the cost of nonmedical home care services for those veterans or surviving spouses who need assistance with the daily activities of living.
To be eligible:
- The veteran or surviving spouse requires assistance with tasks such as dressing, bathing, cooking and eating
- The veteran or surviving spouse meets certain medical and financial criteria
- The veteran served 90 days or more on active duty, with at least one day during a period of war, and meets other military service criteria.
Homemaker and Home Health Aide (H/HHA) Care Services
Veterans of any age who need help in their own home with the activities of daily living, skilled care services and case management may benefitfrom the services of a Homemaker or Home Health Aide. All veterans enrolled in the Veterans Health Administration Standard Medical BenefitsPackage are eligible for the H/HHA Services if they meet the clinical need for the assistance. The program is also an avenue for in-home respite care for family caregivers.
Taking Care of the Benefits Application
Applying for veteran benefitscan be a complex process that could take months for the application to be approved. To help make the application for veteran benefits as seamless as possible, businesses like Right at Home, a nationwide leader in home care services, partner with Veterans Care Coordination™ (VCC) to take care of the paperwork headaches so applicants can concentrate on feeling better.
As veterans and their families consider a professional caregiving team, it’s important to finda home care agency that develops a customized care plan and matches the veteran with the most appropriate caregiver—a caring, compassionate professional who has passed extensive interviews and background checks and is thoroughly trained and insured/bonded.
